Matchbox Dornier Do-18 Civil or Military G-1/V-2 - Luftwaffe Calais-based 3/KuFlGr 406 (1940) or 2/KuyFlGr 506 Kiel 1938 or Civil D-AANE 'Zyklon' Lufthansa South Atlantic Mail Service (1938), 1/72, PK-409

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sold

Dated 1979. Nicely detailed kit for that time with markings for the three aircraft listed above. Never started. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. Please note that one prop shaft (not seen after assembly) is broken off and missing. Easily replaced with stock plastic or pulled sprue. Lufthansa was a pioneer in trans-oceanic mail services and the Do-15 and Do-18 grew to fit this need. Given the German interests in South America, it was no surprise that they established one of the first airmail services between Europe and that continent. This kit will build one of those aircraft, the Lufthansa South Atlantic Mail Aircraft (1938) D-AANE 'Zyklon' or the military version. The Do-18 was an improved D0-15 'Wal' and set several records during it's long useful life.

US Borax Borax Twenty Mule Team and Wagon Death Valley Days - (20 Mule Team), 1/48

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG++

Sold

Rare two-box issue. For one reason or another, US Borax started shipping this classic kit in two boxes 'To Ensure Safe Arrival.' The Borax company commissioned this kit as a tie-in to the TV series 'Death Valley Days.' Never started. The black parts are still in the factory sealed bag with instructions. The blue parts bag started to split, but I have inventoried it complete and put the original bag into another bag for safely. Originally a radio program, 'Death Valley Days' had a long run on television and ended as one of the longest running westerns in entertainment history. Very nice kit of the famous borax wagons that would cross 162 miles of Death Valley with 20 mules in the days before the railroad. There was not a single house or other sign of habitation along the route. One leg was 60 miles with no water. The two wagons carried 25 tons of Borax and the mules covered 16 to 18 miles a day with a two man crew. The sturdy wagons were purpose built for the trip. Although they carried huge loads, there is no record of one every being stranded. This kit was primarily sold by direct mail order and was usually sent in a single box; that is how 99% of them I have seen are packed. Admittedly, the parts are really crammed into that one box and damage could result. So this 'two box' system might (I am guessing) have been a result of that. There was also an issue in a full color, larger box but is is almost as rare as the two-box system shown here.

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed Mint

Sold

Still factory sealed and in investment-grade condition. The box has a copyright date of 1960, but given the non-'Famous Fighters' logo and 100 price extension, this kit is from about 1965/66.

Sold

Still factory sealed and in investment-grade condition. 1960s issue.

Aurora Japanese Zero, 1/48, 88-100

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed Mint

Sold

Still factory sealed; there is one small 1/2" split on the upper left edge. Other than that, the seal is intact. Rare kit in investment-grade condition. Dated 1959 but likely from the early 1960s because of the logo variation. Fantastic Mort Kunstler box art. NOTE: this kit must be shipped insured.

Aurora SNJ Trainer, 1/48, 80-79

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed Mint

Sold

Still mint in the factory seal. Dated 1960. Very likely the 3rd issue of this kit because the box top oval logo does not have the 'Famous Fighters' in the border, making this the 1963+ issue. This was a good kit for the time, featuring 'good' cockpit detail, pilot and student figures, rotating prop and US Navy decals. Molded in yellow and clear.

Monogram Japanese Submarine I-19 with Glen Seaplane - (ex-Aurora), 1/275, 3103

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed VG+

Sold

Still factory sealed. From original Aurora molds. The I-19 is famous for firing history's most successful torpedo spread off Guadalcanal. On September 14, 1942, the I-19 was patrolling of the Solomons when the crew made visual contact with the American forces. After working into position, she fired a 6 torpedo spread. Three hit and sank the US Carrier CV-7 WASP, and the remaining three exploded against the BB North Carolina and the destroyer O'Brien. The destroyer sank and the North Carolina had to be repaired at Pearl till November 16, 1942. The I-19's Glen seaplane also flew night reconnaissance on February 23, 1942 over Pearl Harbor for the planned second attack by Emily flying boats on that base. Large scale kit is almost 16 inches long when assembled. This is an excellent model for that time from Aurora's improved efforts of the late 1960s/early 1970s. Aurora knew that the older kits were outclassed and cut a new series of better molds including several ships, helos and subs. The result was higher mold quality and very good detail, such as this kit. Includes display stand, decals, periscope and cranes, Glen seaplane, conning tower and deck guns.

Monogram Wolfpack U-505 Type IX U-Boat - (ex-Aurora), 1/209, 3102

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Molded in medium gray plastic. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. This model is a copy of the captured U-505 that is displayed at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.

Monogram Curtiss P-36A Hawk (Model 75) - White Box Issue, 1/72, 6790

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc++

Sold

Dated 1973. Well detailed and molded in silver and clear plastic. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. NOTE: the decals are intact and complete but have age micro-cracking. Please see the article (on this website) on how to restore and use old decals. The Hawk P-36A has the dubious distinction of fighting on both sides and for more countries than any other plane in history during the opening years of WWII. This Hawk, one in a long progression of famous fighter aircraft, was the winner of a 1935 competition. The USAA Corps received the first aircraft in April of 1938 and the French ordered 100 aircraft in May of the same year. French Hawks shot down just over 30 German planes during the battle for France. The Germans captured the aircraft and sold them to Finland. Others were captured when the Germans overran Norway. In all over 800 Hawks were produced and served in China, Netherlands East Indies, Portugal, Great Britain, Thailand, Argentina and Peru. Although an excellent fighter in 1935, the Hawk was outclassed by the time the war started but when flown properly still gave a good account of itself.
