ITC Curtiss Condor - Eastern Air Service or Antarctic Expedition II, 1/84, 3724

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good++

Sold

ITC was the model manufacturing arm of the giant Ideal Toy Company. Ideal only made plastic models for a very short time in the late 1950s and early 1960s before all production was discontinued. Luckily, they made some great subjects. This Condor is molded in the correct bright orange with blue-tinted clear windows and base. Includes decals for both variants. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions.

Still factory sealed but the seal has split and drawn the box concave. Softbox issue dated 1959 with Campbell artwork. Very neatly molded. Comes with markings for Air Force version only, but can be built as a Civil 240/340 Convairliners if the builder furnishes his/her own decals.

Aurora Cessna 310, 1/62, 283-50

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

Sold

NOTE: builder only, please read carefully. 1963 issue from ex-Comet molds. Neatly molded with all recessed panel lines, rotating propellers, display stand and full pinstripe decals. The kit has never been started. NOTE: missing one tip tank half. The other three are present; you can use one as a master and cast one in resin (if you are good at that), or the kit can be built without the tip tanks, and 310s do exist without them (although it is unusual). Also missing one side clear window, which can be replaced with clear plastic stock as it is almost flat. Inventoried with all other parts present including decals and instructions. Aurora had started a line of inexpensive 29 cent kits in about 1957. The line was a success, and it was expanded. The line grew again when Aurora purchased the Comet molds, as most of Comet's line was very small scale kits, many of them civil aircraft like this one. It appears that Aurora was encouraged by the sale of the ex-Comet civil aircraft, as it expanded the line with it's own molds in the early 1960s.

The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions.

Hawk 1909 Hupmobile - Highway Classics, 1/24, 635-60

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

Sold

Rare kit dated 1964. Hawk did not issue many automobile kits, but when they did they chose interesting subjects. This one is 1/24 scale and molded in yellow plastic with black wheels. The kit has never been started. Inventoried 100% complete including instructions. The 1909 Hupmobile was among the first cars to look 'long, low and lovely' with a racy appearance. Rarely seen now, the Hupmobile was very popular in that day due to good performance, looking a bit like a Mercer or Stutz but sporting a much lower price tag. And this kit has a very interesting history also! The molds were originally cut by Kaysun in Japan @ 1954. The kits were a huge advance over the 'Highway Miniatures' and if put side to side put the Revell offerings to shame. I do not know of other kits from Kaysun beyond the two cars. Later in the 1950s Strombecker purchased these molds and issued them in very colorful boxes. However, Strombecker discontinued all plastic kit production in the late 1950s. In 1964 Hawk somehow located these molds. Always with an eye to quality, the Mates brothers knew these were perfect kits for their expanding line of models. The called the Rambler and Hupmobile 'Highway Classics' and issued them in full color boxes that sported photos of the actual built models. There were at least three issues; one at 50 cents, one at 60 cents and one with a special case. However good the kit, the subject matter simply did not catch on and eventually the kits were withdrawn from the line. Polks Hobby Modelcraft found and purchased the molds in 1982 but did not issue the kits. In 1988 Mandrill Manufacturing purchased the Strombecker molds and it is possible these two Kaysun kits is among them.

Hawk 1902 Rambler Model C Runabout - Highway Classics, 1/24, 634-60

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sold

Rare kit dated 1964. Hawk did not issue many automobile kits, but when they did they chose interesting subjects. 1/24 scale and molded in silver plastic with black wheels. The kit has never been started. Inventoried 100% complete including instructions. This is a very early car with an interesting history. The 1902 Rambler was the first car offered for sale by the Thomas B. Jeffery Company. This later became Nash Motors, which was then later purchased to become part of American Motors. The Model C had a one cylinder 8 HP engine and could speed along at 25 mph. Originally it had wire wheels, but these proved too fragile for the state of roads in the very early 1900s - the company soon changed these to wooden spoke wheels, which are represented on this model. The car had tiller steering and brakes on the rear wheel only.
