Maircraft was originally founded in the early or mid 1930s by Gordon Christoph and went by the name Aircraft Model Company. The company produced a typical line of solid 'profile cut' kits that required the usual high talent levels for carving and finishing. A former Comet Model Airplane & Supply Co. salesman, Jack Mair, bought the company in the early 1940s and renamed it Maircraft. This company was one of the handful of solid kit producers who issued models in a consistent 1/48 scale during the 1930s and 1940s (others included Hawk and Dyna-Model). This lead to one of the most desirable and rare model kits ever produced in the USA - the wood/plastic 1/48 United DC-3 model issued immediately after World War 2. Other than the P-61 and a few other Maircraft offerings, most were simple kits that sold for the low price of about 35 cents and gave the owners many hours of pleasurable work. This kit features a full size plan with instructions steps, fuselage that is about 80% 3D cut, profile cut wings and tails, wood stock as required and a small factory sealed paper envelope of details. Never started. The small parts are still sealed; the larger parts that were never sealed have been inventoried complete and includes excellent step-by-step text and illustrated building instructions and full-size three-view plans with fuselage and wing templates.

Rare 1/48 scale kit from the early 1950s. Solid wood, scale display model has about a 7 inch wingspan when built. Features profile cut fuselage and wings, round metal stock for main gear struts, printwood horizontal and vertical stabilizers, tail wheel and main gear wheels and metal propeller. It includes a fantastic set of full-size three view plans with step-by-step, beautifully illustrated instructions with fuselage and wing templates. Never started. Larger scale Pyro kit. Full hull model measures about 7 inches long when assembled. Nicely molded in wood brown and white with billowing sails and a display stand. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes instructions. This is one of the 'intermediate' line of Pyro ship kits, which were first called '$1.00 Models' and in 1967 were renamed '$1.25 Models.' All were roughly the same size and were a significant increase in detail from the Pyro '50 Cent Models' line (later called 74 cent models). Kits in the $1.00/$1.25 line (by 1967) included the Skipjack, Cutty Sark, Charles W. Morgan, HMS Bounty, HMS Ark Royal, USS Constellation, British Bomb Ketch, Chinese War Junk, Elsie - Gloucester Fisherman, Henri Grace A'Dieu, Dutch Staten Jacht, Gotta Le Jon and others. 50 Cent/75 Cent kits in 1967 included the Mayflower, Barbary Pirate, USS Constitution, Santa Maria, Golden Hind, Half Moon, Bon Homme Richard, Brig of War, HMS Victory, Flying Cloud, Nina, Pinta, Santa Maria, La Reale French Galley, Venetian Carrack, Roman Merchant, Spanish Galleon and others.

1954 original issue of the famous Highway Pioneers 'Foreign Car' series. These issues feature the same 5 car artwork on every box; the only way to identify the contents was an ink-stamped name on the box ends. Molded in gloss dark green plastic. This kit has never been started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions present. These kits have a fascinating history. Hobbies were nothing new to America in the 1930s/40s, but they were not mainstream and never made the top 10 list of boys activities. Spurred on by the nation-wide aviation craze in the 1920s, many became modelers and built flying or static wooden models of airplanes, ships, trains, automotive and other subjects. Basic kits existed, but many of these models were built from scratch, which demanded a high talent level developed from years of experience. That changed in the early 1950s when the Gowland & Gowland/Revell Highway Pioneers became the sales sensation of the year. Demand was so great that the factories could not keep up and almost overnight 'model building' was mainstream. The phenomenon of the 'Highway Pioneers' kits was a significant force in proving that model building as a hobby could have mass appeal, provided that the kits were easy enough to build and finish. These 1/32 scale vehicles fit the bill: they could be built in an hour after dinner and looked much like the real cars. The success of the Highway Pioneers lead to the production of other subjects in plastic and the effect was revolutionary. By the late 1950s, model building was the #1 past time of American boys...and many adult males too!

Very rare model from about about 1942/3. It is a completely pre-fabricated multi-media kit; No painting is required and all parts are formed to final shape. It features fully carved and painted hardwood fuselage, carved and painted main gear wheels and struts, heavy, die-cut red and black cardstock wings, tail feathers, gear doors and other details, and cylindrical hardwood dowels for machine guns and gear door actuators. The cardstock wings have top and bottom halves and when placed over the main spar they are 3D with an airfoil. Never started. The kit has been inventoried and NOTE: missing one piece of die-cut cardstock, the main wing spare. Easily made since there is a perfect pattern: the sheet is present where it was neatly die-cut from. Otherwise includes all other parts and instructions. NOTE: the instructions have bug damage, but not enough to interfere with assembly. Also note: while a historical bit of modeling, this is not a scale model. It is in the middle-ground between being a toy and a model. Universal Toy and Novelty Company was located at 1225 South Wabash Avenue in Chicago Illinois. Although they were around for decades and had extensive production, little is known about the company. When model kits became popular in the 1920s during the early aviation craze, they were quick to jump on the bandwagon. In the 1920s they are also know for a fine series of baseball cards. Other model kits were of ships, tanks, etc. and some had incredibly colorful box designs like the Cruiser Chicago and some landing craft.

Rare 1954 Pre-S issue. Very nicely detailed kit of the classic 'Wild West' Chuck Wagon (aka the first food truck). Features full suspension, rear shelves, back fold-down deck, coffee pot, pot, lamp, bell, accessories, two horses, calf, dog, two men and more. Inside, the kit has not been started. It has been inventoried and NOTE: missing rear axle and coffee pot. Otherwise complete with all other parts and instructions. 'Miniature Masterpieces' was formed through an alliance of Lew Glaser (Revell) and Steve Adams (Adams Action Models) in 1953. Although the molds were made at Adams and it had the appearance of an independent company, the firm was run by Revell down to the prototypes being made at the Revell plant. Originally there was no evidence of the parent company on the surface. The State Coach of England was the first kit - without figures and horses, issued in 1953. More kits of excellent quality followed. Revell completely took over the line in 1954 and in that year and the next, kits were labeled 'Revell' with a 'Miniature Masterpiece' label on the box top also. 1954 advertisements from Revell list the complete line as the H506 State Coach of England, H510 Ranch Wagon, H503 Covered Wagon, H502 Marquis de Lafayette Carriage, H504 Roman Racing Chariot, H501 Wells Fargo Stage Coach, H509 Western Figures and H507 Chuck Wagon.
