Gowland & Gowland Golden Hind Shipyard Ships in Bottles

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

Rare, early, small scale ship kit from 1952. Very nicely detailed and molded for that time and includes a clear plastic 'bottle' for display inside. Features detailed hull, masts, sails, molded sea display base and clear sheet plastic with the delicately printed ratlines. Includes beautiful color instructions with the ship history, illustrations of assembly, how to set the sails and even rigging. The scale is not given, but the sea base measures 6.5"x2" and the ship is approximately 5 inches long. There is no assembly but NOTE: the hull is neatly painted red below the waterline. There is no other painting. Inventoried complete with all parts, bottle, cork and includes instructions. The box sides illustrates and names the 10 kits of this line. All were available in regular or 'Ship In A Bottle' (like this one) versions. The 'Bottle' was also available separately; it was cleverly molded so that the seam was exactly where a bottle seam was normally located back then and a cork stopper was included. The entire set consists of the Santa Maria 1492, Golden Hind 1588, Mayflower 1620, Bon Homme Richard 1779, SS Savannah 1819, The Flying Cloud 1849, Charles W. Morgan 1850, Gertrude L. Thebaud 1929, Frigate Constitution 1797 and US Revenue cutter 1849. It appears that Gowland & Gowland has not received the credit that it deserves in the plastic kit revolution that took America by storm in the early 1950s. Gowland developed the first all plastic car made in the USA in 1950, the 1911 Maxwell. Even more interesting is that Kevin and Jack Gowland developed the 'Highway Pioneers' in 1951 which heralded the future for the American Hobby Industry. The reason that Gowland's name is not in the fore-front of model history is that Precision Specialties (later Revell) did the distribution for Gowland.

Guillows Fairchild 24 - 25 inch Wingspan for Free Flight or R/C Conversion, 701

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

Sold

From 1993 and a reissue of the famous 1960s flier. Large and well engineered stick and tissue model can be flown rubber free flight, gas free flight, or converted to electric RC using modern small and light servos and receivers. Nicely detailed with scale plastic wheels, plastic propeller, vacuform nose/cowl and engine, full color decals, colored tissue, die cut balsa parts, rubber motor, plywood firewall and excellent full size plans. The model has not been started. The parts are either still in the factory sealed bag or inventoried complete. Guillow's founder, Paul K. Guillow, was a WWI naval aviator. In 1926 he began producing wooden model airplane kits. His 'Shelf Models' were some of the earlier non-flying models in production. Guillow's grew during the model boom of the 1930s, and when the Depression hit the hardest, Guillow's responded with lower prices and became one of the low price leaders, frequently advertising in Model Airplane News and other leading publications. During the war, like most manufacturers, Guillow's was forced to alternative materials such as cardboard and pine. Guillow's survived the post WWII slump by creating many inexpensive profile flying rubber powered aircraft and gliders in the 1950s (along with North Pacific) which became famous - some are still available today. The stick and tissue lines have been updated with laser cut parts and are still in production as of 2009.

Comet was a famous manufacturer of stick and tissue flying and static models. In the 1930s Great Depression, they lead the low-priced kit revolution with the "Dime Scale" kits and famous advertisements in Model Airplane News magazine and others. Comet reached it's peak in the 1930s when they acquired the services of Carl Goldberg. Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). Comet survived the post World War economic slump and continued kit production until they were bought out by long-time competitor Guillow's in 1998.
