Airfix DH Comet 4B Dan-Air - Classic Airliners Special Edition, 1/144, 04176

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed NM

Sold

Still factory sealed. From 1994. Nice 1/144 scale kit of the world's first jet airliner. The initial Comet I was in operation long before the 707, which gave the British an incredible post-war lead in the expanding civil aviation market. Just as the Comet was flying high and orders were pouring in from around the world, Comets began to mysteriously fall out of the sky. Everything from lighting to terrorist bombs were blamed. For months the root cause went undiscovered. Then, in a landmark investigation that is considered the first modern post-crash autopsy, it was discovered that the stresses around a small ADF window on the top of the fuselage were causing metal fatigue failure when the fuselage was pressurized. To confirm this, a Comet I was placed in a water tank and subjected to pressurization stresses. After some time, a dramatic failure occurred. Then parts of a crashed Comet were pulled from underwater proving once and for all that this was the root cause.

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed Good

Sold

The model represents an early 'short' -100 and features very fine raised detail, full landing gear, a display stand and stunning early JAL full color decals just like the box art aircraft. This was back when airlines would name aircraft, and this one is 'Tone,' which is a river in Japan. Otaki was started by Mr. Masaru Otaki in 1960, which is the same year that Tamiya went into business. Early Otaki kits have this unique logo and no part number; many are so rare that they are not documented yet. Otaki was only around for two decades, going out of business in 1980 due to financial difficulties.

Inside, it is factory-fresh with all parts still sealed in the original clear bag with the decals and with instructions in great condition. Even the original tube of glue is included. Please note, this kit is normally listed as 1/72, so I have listed it as such. By the wingspan, it is 1/78 scale.
