My friend and model builder Stephen Payne high recommends that the purchaser of any Beaufighter Night Fighter model invests in a copy of the book "Night Fighter" by C.F. Rawnsley. Rawnsley was John Cunningham's Airborne Intercept radar operator throughout WWII in both Beaufighters and Mosquitoes. The book is the story of their time and combat together and makes excellent reading.

Monogram Japanese Submarine I-19 with Glen Seaplane - (ex Aurora), 1/275, 3103

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

$85

From the original Aurora molds. The I-19 is famous for firing history's most successful torpedo spread off Guadalcanal. On September 14, 1942, I-19 was patrolling of the Solomons when the crew made visual contact with American forces. After working into position, she fired a 6 torpedo spread; three hit and sank the US Carrier CV-7 Wasp and the remaining three exploded against the BB North Carolina and the destroyer O'Brien. The destroyer sank and the North Carolina was under repair until November 16, 1942. The I-19's Glen seaplane also flew night reconnaissance on February 23, 1942 over Pearl Harbor for the planned second attack by Emily flying boats on that base. She was depth-charged and sunk by DD-446 Radford on 11.25.43, off Makin Island. This large scale kit is almost 16 inches long when assembled. It is an excellent model for that time from Aurora's improved quality and detail efforts of the late 1960s/early 1970s. Aurora knew that the older kits were outclassed and cut a new series of better molds including several ships, helos and subs. The result was higher mold quality and very good detail, such as this kit. Features full hull with excellent molded detail, deck with proper molded-in wood planking, complete propeller & rudder detail, periscope and cranes, Glen seaplane, conning tower, deck guns and more. Includes a display stand. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions.

Very well detailed featuring rotating wheels, radio, jerry cans, detailed chassis and suspension, tilting windshield, driver/soldier and general figure, detachable trailer with rotating wheels, generator, cable reel, packs, tool box and more. Molded in olive drab plastic and with metal axles. Never started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. These molds must have had a very interesting history. The molds were cut in 1955 or 1956, either at Adams or by one of Revell's contractors. It appeared to be part of the Adams/Revell 1/40 line but Adams never issued the kit. UPC (Universal Power Master) had use of these molds in the 1960s are perhaps the early 1970s; however, the molds were probably in Japan as most if not all the UPC production occured there. Things get even more interesting with this Life-Like issue, which must have been after the UPC operation ceased operation. How Life-Like came across the molds is unfortunately unknown but it may have been in a bulk-purchase of molds that were located overseas. This is simply conjecture, however.
