MPM Aichi M6A1-K Nanzan - (M6A1K), 1/72, CZ004

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

$32

Early in the development of the Seiran submarine based float plane, two preproduction airframes emerged with retractable landing gear for land operation. These were likely the 5th and 6th prototypes and they had dual controls. They were given the 'K' designation for trainer. They could also be operated from the submarines as they had the same catapult attachment. Training may have taken place like this with and airbase landing. It is interesting that the original Seiran concept did not call for floats as the aircraft would launch from the submarine catapult and crash-land beside the submarine when the mission was over. This limited edition model kit features fine recessed panel line detail and decals for both aircraft. Never started. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes decals and instructions.

Ace Model Shop Sport Roadster, 1/24, 146

Dated 1946. This well designed kit is primarily wood with plastic wheels and tires and with some metal details and other metal parts. Features main wood parts that are all cut to profile (cut in two dimensions) or die cut and other wood stock such as dowels and blocks. There are four excellent plastic one-piece wheels with tread and a small clear wax paper sack with some small metal parts (like a steering wheel, etc.). There are excellent instructions with detailed building text, full size three view drawings, photos of the assembly process and a very nice photo of the built model. Never started. The kit has been inventoried with all parts present, and the small parts bag is still factory sealed. The famous modeler Gordon A. Babb founded Ace in 1942. Mr. Babb was born in 1897 and became a well-known builder and competitor in the model field with aircraft and cars. National 'how to' hobby magazines often carried details articles about how to build his designs. In his first year in business, he sold 1,800 jeep kits. By 1952 the line had greatly expanded the line to hot rods, T-rods, midgets, roadsters and much more and he was expecting to sell 600,000 model kits. Mr. Babb was famous for inventing the first gas-powered midget racer model which sparked a nation-wide building spree and speed competition. His 'Ace Model Shop' was in Pasadena, California and the mailing address was 60 N. San Gabriel Blvd. Later the address was simply Ace Products, Pasadena 8, California. Most solid 'display' kit producers in the 1940s simply provided plans and blocks of wood, maybe with a few accessories. Ace went well beyond that with all cut-out parts, fully formed wheels and even some metal parts, occasionally small plastic details and sometimes even decals. The plans went well beyond the average also, featuring numerous views (not just three), detail views for sub-assemblies and even text instructions. There were at least 15 car kits in the line and also many military vehicles which were popular kits in World War 2. We don't know what happened to Ace 'Models Of Merit' but the introduction of plastic kits (started by the Highway Pioneers) put an end to most wood kit production.

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sanwa was one of Japan's earliest post-WWII kit producers, making model kits in the 1950s; some sources say 1955. Kits were marketed under Sanwa and Tokyo Plamo, with the general consensus being the the later logo came out around 1960 or later. Production ended in 1964, making all Sanwa kits rare and collectible. The entire line was extensive. It included very small scale tanks (some that were motorized), battleships in three scales with the larger ones motorized with dual prop drive, slot cars, civil sport boats and an electric outboard, a full line of hand gun models that actually shot plastic bullets, two fighter groups and bomber groups (probably Monogram), several different lines of scale aircraft, missile kits, scale (static) car models of early Japanese automobiles, at least 7 flying model aircraft that had electric and rubber motors, a 'Super Control Stand' P-51 that moved with a joystick and had an electric propeller and sound unit, two different lighthouses and a windmill, an air cushion boat, motor cycles, a diving submarine (electric) and a working (rubber band) George Washington Class SSBN and even a garden tractor with an electric motor. Just before going out of business, Sanwa issued some kits in conjunction with the 1964 Tokyo Olympic games - these kits even included a copy of an Olympic medal.
