Borodino was the lead ship of a class of pre-dreadnought battleships built for the Imperial Russian Navy. She was finished after the start of the Russo-Japanese war in 1904. After completion she was sent with a squadron from Libau to break the Japanese blockade of Port Arthur, but while in transit the Japanese occupied the port. The Second Pacific Squadron sailed instead to Vladivostok, the last Russian port in the far east. After a very long voyage and numerous delays, the Japanese certainly knew they were coming and set up for battle to cut the Russians off at Tsushima Strait. Borodino saw action at Tsushima early on. After taking serious damage, the Russians were not interested in further battle and around 1700 they turned away from Japanese cruisers- but ran into the Japanese battleships again. 10 minutes later Togo ordered his ship to cease fire and disengage; the battleship Fuji had already loaded her 12" guns and fired them before the turn away. One of these shells hit Borodino under her starboard 6 inch turret, which started a fire in the ready ammunition that quickly spread to a 6" magazine. This caused a chain reaction and massive magazine explosions. Only one man survived from a crew of 855.
