Dumas 1/290 Essex Class Aircraft Carrier 36 Inches Long plastic model kit

1/290 Dumas Essex Class Aircraft Carrier 36 Inches Long

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG++

Very, very rare kit from 1945. This is the only one I have ever seen or heard of. Dumas advertised this kit as 'A beautiful 36" model as accurate as possible under war conditions' and that was no idle boast. By all appearances it was the most detailed US aircraft carrier model ever made to that date. Features hollow construction, airwing, factory marked bulkhead balsa blocks, high quality balsa printwood, other wood as required, metal stock, rigging material, sandpaper, an unopened can of 'Delicate Gray' Gloss Enamel (with a 'Four Hour Drying Time") and a glass bottle of glue. Amazingly, the glue and paint area still both a liquid and not dried up. Comes with text instructions and plans. The two very large sheets of plans were drawn by Al Dumas Jr. They include full side and top elevation views, sectional views and a large number of detail drawings for AA guns, aircraft construction and much more. There is light bug damage to one side of one sheet but it is minor. The kit has not been started. The contents are mint - you will be the first to remove them from the box. They are still factory packed with factory packing paper. Dumas says inside this is an Essex-Class carrier, but due to wartime censorship and the initial secrecy surrounding the Essex class, the kit is not a perfect Essex. When more information became available after the war, this may have been why the model was discontinued so soon.
