Ontos is a Greek word for 'The Thing' and the vehicles lives up to that. Developed along a new concept in mobile warfare, the Ontos has little defense other than movement but a very powerful offensive punch. It carries six 106mm recoilless rifles and .50 caliber spotting rifles. The firing sequence went like this: the crew of three would get out and hand load the six large guns. Then the Ontos would quickly move towards the target. Once sited, the gunner would fire the .50 caliber machines guns until he saw them hit the target - this assured that the 6 big rifles were on target also. At the time, he could fire a full salvo of 6 or in steps of two. The 8.5 ton vehicle would then speed away, moving to a safe location to reload.
