Wood Model Kit, Box Condition: Good-
From 1944. The 'Speed Glider' here was designed by the great Carl Goldberg. This type of model was tied to a string, which was in turn connected to a wooden stick 2 or 3 feet long. An accomplished pilot could whip the aircraft around, performing an excellent variety of stunts. As you can imagine, the kit has very sturdy construction to take these high speed maneuvers. It features two sheets of die cut, thin hardwood parts, hardwood and balsa stock, two sheets of full color covering material with complete aircraft color, windows and insignia (which completely eliminates painting) and detailed plans with balance and flight information. The fuselage is profile, while the wings and tail surfaces are built up the traditional stick and tissue way. Although in the end, there is no tissue but the superb full color decorated paper wraps that cover all the surfaces of the model. This kit has never been started. NOTE: missing one small section of one wood sheet; the three small parts on it are on the other sheet, they are very simple to duplicate. Inventoried with all other parts, covering papers and plans. The box appears much better than 'Good-' but I have graded it such because one large end flap and the four small flaps have fallen off. They are present and included however, and you could easily repair the box to make it complete. Comet was a famous manufacturer of stick and tissue flying and static models. In the 1930s Great Depression, they lead the low-priced kit revolution with the "Dime Scale" kits and famous advertisements in Model Airplane News magazine and others. Comet reached it's peak in the 1930s when they acquired the services of Carl Goldberg. Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). Comet survived the post World War economic slump and continued kit production until they were bought out by long-time competitor Guillow's in 1998.

Lindberg is a company with a fascinating history The original 'Lindberg Line' stretches back to the 1930s when Paul Lindberg drew plans for famous modeling magazines and marketed his balsa wood 'stick and tissue' by urging dealers to carry the '...Complete Lindberg Line'. After the war, Lindberg and Olsen had a strong hand in early United States injection molded kit development. Please see the article located on this website about early USA plastic kit manufactures. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. The Convair 880 and its near sister 990 were very high performance airliners. Unfortunately they did not find favor with commercial operators. Only 65 880s were produced from 1959 to 1962. The aircraft was designed to be smaller and faster than the DC-8 and 707 - this market did not develop, however, and if it did it could have been served with less expensive designs. The 990 was a larger and faster (mach .91) airliner, but it failed to meet it's range criteria for east to west crossings of the USA. As a result, only 37 were made. Interestingly enough, several 990s continued to be operated by private owners and NASA operated two 990s for decades after the last 990 was phased out of commercial service.
